What's Your BHAG?

Perhaps the better question is, do you have any?

Some of you may be asking yourself “what the heck is a BHAG?” The term BHAG stands for 'Big Hairy Audacious Goal'. It was proposed by James Collins and Jerry Porras in their 1994 book entitled Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies. In the book, they define a BHAG as a strategic business statement similar to a vision statement which is created to focus an organization on a single medium-long term organization-wide goal which is audacious, likely to be externally questionable, but not internally regarded as impossible.

We can have BHAG’s in any equity of life. It just needs to be something that fires you up and gets you inspired. You may want to complete a marathon…you may want to go on a mission trip…you may want to get married or start a family... you may want to buy a home...you may want to turn your great idea into a business and change the world. Whatever it is, we all need at least one BHAG in our life that fires us up.

Too many people are just going through the motions...wandering around in a daze...not clear on what it is they want... afraid to take a risk and go for it. They may just want things to get better or be different, but they never take the time to define what that better or different is.

So…what’s the BHAG or BHAGs in your life? What do you dream about but never tell anyone because it is so big you are too embarrassed to say it out loud because everyone will think you’re crazy? Yeah...that’s the one. The one that puts a smile on your face when you think about it.

It really doesn’t matter what your BHAG is, there is someone out there in the world, just like you, who has it. So…why not you too?

My challenge to all of you this week is to take some time to write down your BHAG or BHAGs. Figure out exactly what you need to do to accomplish them. Then break that down into small bite size chucks that will lead to your BHAG. What you will discover is that if you sit down and take the time figure out what it is going to take to accomplish your BHAG and then create the steps to get you there, most of the time it’s not as hard as you think. The key is you need to get it out of your head and write it down and then you need to execute on it every day. Just take a bite…take one step at a time and before you know it, you will get there. It’s not always going to be easy, but if you want it bad enough and you don’t ever give up, you will get it.

Have a great week and GO FOR IT!!!!!
